Amarula was born in 1989, when the Southern Liqueur Company (part of Distell) set out to bottle something genuinely African rather than borrow a European template. The result was the world's first cream liqueur built around the marula fruit, and it quickly became one of South Africa's most recognisable exports. The brand is inseparable from its elephant emblem, and that connection runs deeper than marketing: in 2008 the Amarula Trust was established to help protect African elephant populations, which famously feast on the same marula fruit come summer. It's a producer that has always leaned into its sense of place, the trees, the wildlife, and the seasonal rhythm of the harvest.
