Our Verdict

We keep La Chanson on the list because it does something most sparklings won't: it embraces sweetness without apology, and does it with real charm. This isn't a wine trying to be Champagne. It's a ruby-red, low-alcohol fizz built for people who actually enjoy fruit, bubbles and a soft finish, and we've watched it convert plenty of self-declared 'dry only' drinkers at gatherings. Perfect for hen dos, garden parties, or gifting to someone who prefers a prosecco with a bit more personality. A reliable customer favourite for a reason.

Tasting Notes

Pour a glass and you get a vivid ruby colour with a lively pink foam rushing to the rim. The nose is all ripe strawberry and juicy red plum, with a lift of sweet berry compote and a hint of muscat perfume. On the palate it is soft, frothy and unashamedly sweet, with around 75 g/l of natural grape sugar cushioning the fizz. Low alcohol (around 7.5%) keeps things light and easy, and the finish is short, clean and fruit-drenched.

About This Wine

Not every celebration wants a bone-dry Champagne. Sometimes you want a bottle that grins back at you, and that's exactly what La Chanson does. Ruby-red, softly sweet, gently sparkling: this is South Africa's answer to the question 'what if bubbles were just a bit more fun?' The flavour is pure strawberry patch and orchard plum, with a fresh, frothy lift that keeps everything light on its feet. Credit goes to an unusual blend built around Sauvignon Blanc, White Muscadel, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and a whisper of Pinotage, all drawn from vineyards spread across the Western Cape. Colour is coaxed from the skins in the first day of the cellar, and fermentation is stopped cold once the alcohol reaches around 7.5%, leaving plenty of natural grape sugar behind. That's why it drinks so easily and lands so softly. J.C. Le Roux has been South Africa's dedicated sparkling house since 1982, and this bottle sits firmly in its playful Core Range: bubbly designed to be enjoyed rather than analysed. Serve it very cold as an aperitif, alongside a berry pavlova or lemon cheesecake, or pour it with a mildly spiced curry where its sweetness earns its keep. It's also a lovely gift for someone who finds most fizz too austere, sent straight from us to any UK address. Bridal showers, birthdays, sunny afternoons in the garden: La Chanson knows its brief and delivers.

Food Pairing

This is a pudding wine and a party pour rolled into one. The sweet red-berry fruit is glorious alongside a summer pavlova piled with strawberries and cream, or a slice of lemon cheesecake with blueberry coulis. It also handles gentle spice beautifully: think a mild beef curry, Thai chicken with coconut, or a Sunday cheeseboard leaning on soft, creamy styles.

  • Strawberry pavlova with whipped cream
  • Lemon cheesecake with blueberry coulis
  • Mild beef and butterbean curry
  • Thai green chicken curry
  • Fresh berries with clotted cream and shortbread

How to Serve

Decanting

No decanting required. This is a carbonated sparkling made for freshness, and any time in a decanter will only knock the bubbles out. Straight from the bottle to a chilled glass is exactly right.

Ageing & Cellaring

Drink it young, drink it cold. This is a carbonated, fruit-forward style built for immediate enjoyment, not the cellar. The sweet berry character and lively fizz are at their best from the moment you open it, so pop the cork within a year or two of buying.

The Winemaking

This is sparkling wine as celebration, not ceremony. The grapes are hand-picked into small baskets to keep the fruit intact, then given a short 24-hour skin contact to draw out that vivid ruby colour. Fermentation is halted cold, at around 0°C, once alcohol reaches a gentle 7.5%, leaving roughly 75g/l of natural grape sugar in the wine. The sparkle comes from carbonation rather than a second fermentation, keeping the fruit fresh, frothy and unmistakably fruit-driven.

The Western Cape Region

Le Domaine draws its fruit from vineyards scattered across the Western Cape, from coastal sites cooled by Atlantic breezes to warmer inland slopes, all planted between 50 and 300 metres above sea level. This broad sourcing is deliberate. By blending components from different microclimates, the cellar builds a consistent house style that balances the crisp acidity of cooler sites with the ripe generosity of warmer ones. It's the Western Cape's extraordinary diversity captured in a single glass.

About the Producer

JC Le Roux

The House of J.C. Le Roux holds a special place in South African wine history. Founded in 1983, it was the country's first cellar devoted entirely to sparkling wine, a bold move at a time when most South African producers considered bubbles an afterthought. The name honours Jean le Roux, a French Huguenot viticulturist who planted vines in Stellenbosch around 1704, and that pioneering spirit runs through everything the house produces. Based in the Devon Valley just outside Stellenbosch, the cellar released South Africa's first Pinot Noir Méthode Cap Classique in 1985 and has been pushing boundaries ever since. Under cellar master Melanie van der Merwe, the range spans everything from serious Cap Classique to fun, fruit-driven sparklers like Le Domaine. It remains the country's leading dedicated sparkling wine house, the name South Africans reach for when there's something to celebrate.
