Bruce Jack Wines is made up of a small, dynamic team which aims to celebrate authenticity and provenance, not just in the wine they craft, but in everything they do. Head winemakers Bruce Jack and Marlize Beyers have worked together for over two decades, since 2002, and both have extensive experience in many winemaking regions around the world. Human culture started at the tip of Africa, despite it being ‘off the charts’, so it is fitting that something as culturally rooted as wine should thrive there, inspiring the ‘Off the Charts’ wine range, crafted from grape varieties and regions that are South Africa’s viticultural cornerstones. The labels draw inspiration from the untamed majesty of the wilderness and the symbolic Basotho blanket. In 2023, Bruce Jack featured for the fourth consecutive year in the World’s Most Admired Wine Brands, an accolade awarded by the Drinks International.
Vineyard
From the heart of the Overberg, where the wind never quite settles and the air carries the scent of drought, adventure and resilience, the landscape is sculpted with old bush vine vineyards and Big Skies. It’s here on the rolling rugged hills, that the ‘Tumbleweed’ series of wines was born – wines that captures the essence of this pioneering spirit and reflect the raw, unyielding beauty of the region. The Syrah vineyards are located predominantly in the Overberg district of the Cape South Coast region with a small
proportion from the Piekenierskloof region. The vineyards are planted between 400 to 520m above sea level, where the warm days are tempered by cooler nights, allowing the grapes to retain balancing acidity, resulting in a naturally refreshing character in the grapes. The soils are a combination of uplifted (then eroded) sandstone, decomposed granite, quartz, and limestone, iron rich clay and shale, which is reflected
in complexity in the fruit. The vines for this wine are cultivated in trellised vineyards and are hand harvested.
Winemaking
The destemmed and carefully sorted berries were transferred to open-top fermenters, where daily punch downs took place by hand. Fermentation on the skins lasted for 14- 21 days before being pressed with basket press to barrel. The wine underwent 100% malolactic conversion in barrel, rounding out the palate. Maturation lasted for 18 months in 228, 300 and 500-litre barrels, of which 28% were new oak. 7% whole-bunch carbonic fermentation Shiraz was blended for further complexity.
Tasting Note
A Syrah bursting with aromatic complexity, offering notes of bright red fruit, floral nuances, and subtle earthy undertones. The silky palate is full of juicy raspberry and cranberry, seamlessly intertwined with a hint of pepper. Polished and refreshing, through to a well-balanced, enduring finish.
