South African Shiraz

South African Shiraz: A Taste of the Exotic

South African Shiraz (often also labelled as Syrah) is a hallmark of the country’s red wine production, known for bridging the gap between Old World elegance and New World fruit-forward intensity. It thrives in South Africa’s warm Mediterranean climate, producing deeply coloured, full-bodied wines with characteristic notes of blackberryplumblack pepper, and smoked meat.

Key Wine Regions for Shiraz
The diverse terroirs across the Western Cape allow for a wide range of styles:
  • Stellenbosch: Considered highly consistent, producing structured wines that balance savoury complexity with bright fruit.
  • Swartland: Famous for its “Old Vine” Shiraz. The warm, dry climate yields robust, intense, and often mineral-driven wines that age exceptionally well.
  • Paarl: A traditionally warmer region where Shiraz flourishes, resulting in rich, full-bodied wines often showing notes of chocolate and damson.
  • Elgin & Cape Agulhas: Cooler coastal regions that produce a more “Syrah-style”—lighter, more elegant, and perfumed with distinct white pepper and spice

The Magic of South African Shiraz

South African Shiraz wines are renowned for their full-bodied, spicy character that is both complex and inviting. The unique terroir of South Africa’s wine regions, from the Rhône-like climate of Paarl to the robust character of Swartland, contributes to the distinctive taste profile of these wines.

A Closer Look at Our Selection

One of the standout wines in our collection is the Jam Jar Shiraz by Indaba Wines. This wine is a perfect example of the quality and character of South African Shiraz. It is made from grapes grown mainly in vineyards surrounding Paarl, a region ideal for Shiraz cultivation. The wine delivers aromas of ripe blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries with dark chocolate undertones. It strikes a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, making it a very approachable Shiraz.

The Making of South African Shiraz

The process of creating these wines is as unique as the wines themselves. For instance, the Jam Jar Shiraz undergoes a fermentation process that begins spontaneously in stainless steel tanks, using only indigenous yeasts. After fermentation, the wine is left on its skins for an additional five days, and regular pumpovers are performed. This meticulous process contributes to the wine’s distinctive flavour profile.
