Bellevue Estate Malbec – One of Bordeaux’s five blending components, this grape has come into its own in Argentina, where it produces gutsy reds. Bellevue’s Malbec is one of a kind: bold and enchanting, our Wild Child, rapidly acquiring a cult following.

IN THE VINEYARD
From vineyard blocks dating back to 1990, now trellised and partly irrigated. Most of Bellevue`s Malbec vineyards lie on the flat terrain alongside the Bottelary River, with one exception—a vineyard on a southern-facing hillside.

IN THE CELLAR
The grapes were handpicked and were cold soaked before inoculation. The wine fermented for about five days, with pump-overs three times daily. After completing malolactic fermentation in tank the wine was matured in French oak (20% new) for 12 months.

TASTING NOTE
Tantalisingly wild on the nose, with scents of rosemary, fynbos and buchu, but soft on the palate with an abundance of plums and red cherries, underscored by hints of watercress and herbs. Delicious with roast leg of lamb with rosemary and mint, or an African-inspired guineafowl ‘coq’ au vin.

PRODUCER INFORMATION

Bellevue Wine Estate, a family-owned estate with over 200 years of winemaking heritage, proudly pioneered one of South Africa’s first commercial Pinotage plantings. Rooted in Stellenbosch’s rich viticultural history, they created terroir-driven wines with minimal intervention, crafting each bottle to tell a story.

Bellevue’s story is one of bold decisions and forward thinking. When Pieter Krige (P.K.) Morkel couldn’t find Gamay vines in 1953, he embraced a pioneering South African cultivar: Pinotage. This decision not only shaped Bellevue’s identity but also contributed to the global recognition of Pinotage as a uniquely South African wine.
