Four Cousins
Welcome to the world of Four Cousins
Four Cousins is a wine brand born from family, friendship, and the joy of sharing life’s moments. Created in 2000 by the third generation of the Retief family at Van Loveren Family Vineyards in the Robertson Valley, Four Cousins has grown to become South Africa’s best-selling bottled wine brand. The story begins with four cousins – Hennie, Bussell, Phillip, and Neil Retief – who combined their talents and passion to create delicious, accessible wines for people like themselves. Nestled in the heart of the Western Cape’s Breede River Valley, approximately 160 kilometres east of Cape Town, the Robertson Valley provides the perfect terroir for crafting wines that celebrate togetherness. With the Langeberg Mountains as a dramatic backdrop and the Breede River flowing through, this sun-drenched region produces wines of exceptional fruit character and approachability. As you explore our collection, you’ll discover why Four Cousins has become synonymous with family gatherings, celebrations, and the simple pleasure of raising a glass with friends.

Four Cousins represents more than just wine – it embodies the spirit of family, togetherness, and celebrating life’s special moments, whether grand occasions or everyday joys. The brand’s philosophy is captured in their motto “Toast to Life. Nca!” – an invitation to raise your glass and appreciate the good things in life.
The Robertson Valley, where Four Cousins wines originate, enjoys a unique combination of hot, dry summers tempered by cooling south-easterly breezes from the Indian Ocean some 90 kilometres away. This distinctive climate, with significant temperature variation between warm days and cool nights, allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their natural freshness and developing concentrated fruit flavours. The region receives minimal annual rainfall of around 250-400mm, making irrigation from the Breede River essential, while the diverse soils – ranging from lime-rich alluvial deposits to gravelly clay loams – contribute to the fruity, easy-drinking character that Four Cousins wines are celebrated for.
Van Loveren Family Vineyards, the home of Four Cousins, has been in the Retief family since 1937 when Hennie Retief senior acquired the land. The farm was renamed Van Loveren in honour of Christina van Loveren, an ancestor who arrived in South Africa in 1699. Today, the four cousins each bring their expertise to the business: Hennie and Neil serve as viticulturists managing the vineyards, Bussell is the cellar master overseeing winemaking, and Phillip handles the commercial operations. This combination of skills has driven Van Loveren to become one of South Africa’s largest family-owned wineries, exporting to nearly 70 countries worldwide.
What sets Four Cousins apart is their commitment to creating wines that enhance every occasion. From their iconic Natural Sweet wines, which launched in distinctive 1.5-litre bottles and made an immediate impact in the market, to their range of reds, whites, and rosés, every bottle is crafted with the same dedication to quality and enjoyment. The brand has evolved to include an exciting array of beverages beyond wine, ensuring there’s something special for every palate and celebration.
Van Loveren’s commitment to sustainability is equally impressive. As a WWF Conservation Champion and Fairtrade-accredited estate, they have pioneered the vine-by-pole trellising system in Robertson to improve grape quality, while their 2,500-hectare conservation initiative demonstrates their dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the region. This forward-thinking approach, combined with their focus on community empowerment, sets a new standard in the South African wine industry.
We invite you to experience the warmth and generosity that defines Four Cousins. Whether you’re hosting a family braai, enjoying a quiet evening at home, or celebrating a milestone with friends, Four Cousins wines are crafted to make every moment memorable.
